Food & Thought: #WIRtschaft für Demokratie
2nd of September 2025
Democracy requires commitment and strong networks
Democracy Needs Commitment and Strong Networks
Democracy is like a house we all live in: a place of security and freedom. But like every house, it requires care, attention, and a willingness to take responsibility. This was precisely the focus of our discussion under the title “#Business for Democracy”.
Together with the Business Council for Democracy (BC4D) and the Employers’ Association of the Private Banking Industry, the Banking Association Mitte invited representatives from business, finance, and politics to an evening of exchange, inspiration, and engaged discussion.
Companies as Stakeholders in a Resilient Democracy
The conversations made it clear that the role of companies in a democracy goes far beyond their core business:
- Taking a stand: Especially in times of social tension, it is crucial that companies clearly uphold democratic values.
- Assuming responsibility: Companies are responsible not only for their employees but also for the societal climate in which they operate.
- Contributing to strength: Through educational initiatives, clear positioning, and a values-based leadership culture, companies can make a decisive contribution to strengthening democracy.
Inspiring Impulses and Open Dialogue
Particularly impressive were the contributions of Elisabeth Niejahr (Hertie Foundation), Dr. Florens Mayer (Civey), and Carsten Rogge-Strang (Employers’ Association of the Private Banking Industry). They raised central questions and opened new perspectives that enriched the subsequent discussions.
A heartfelt thank you also goes to our Chairwoman Sabine Mlnarsky, who hosted this dinner at Commerzbank AG and thereby provided a meaningful framework for this important dialogue.
Democracy Thrives on Dialogue
The evening highlighted once again: Democracy requires not only political institutions but also the active engagement of business and society. It thrives on dialogue, on collaboration—and on the shared commitment to uphold its values.
